About us

Margot & Michiel — hospitable since 1999

Who we are

We are Margot van der Aart & Michiel Smit, both born in 1972. We met in Renesse in the summer of 1993 at Discotheek ’t Roefke.

A few months later our paths diverged for a while, as I (Margot) had a Working Holiday in Australia planned. After my adventure Down Under and frequent contact by phone and letter with Michiel, we immediately moved in together in Utrecht.

After five wonderful years in the city, we traded Utrecht for beautiful Renesse and took over the guesthouse that my parents had owned since 1975. Since 1999, we have been working with great pleasure at Pension Grol!

't Huis Grol — National Monument

A country estate since 1599

’t Huis Grol is a National Monument — a former country estate in the center of Renesse. The origins of the estate date back at least to 1599. ‘Grol’ means ‘green’, and that name still holds true today.

The seepage water from the dunes provides a constant supply of fresh groundwater along the inner dune edge — resulting in lush vegetation. The garden of ’t Huis Grol is still a green oasis, a perfect place to unwind.

Renesse & Zeeland

Renesse is a charming seaside resort on the North Sea. The wide sandy beach is naturally the main attraction, but the surrounding area is also excellent for cycling and walking tours.

In Zeeland, you will discover beautiful historic towns such as Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg. Zeeland is a treasure trove of regional products that many restaurants use in their kitchens. Our guesthouse is located just 100 meters from the lively center of Renesse.
